Week 12 - April 25

The 10AM and 1PM Lab sessions are dedicated to personal project and team project work.

From 2:00 - 2:30, your project team needs to revisit the team project tracking google form (emailed to the class in the morning) to put in a link to a presentation that will introduce the gist of your team project plan to the rest of the class. The review is more informational than a polished presentation.

From 2:30 - 3:10, the groups will walk through plans and directions and make requests for what they need to finish the projects. Review Team Project Page to see what is expected and when.

  • Team D -> 2:30 - 2:38 Zack, Melissa, Liz
  • Team R -> 2:38 - 2:46 Niyi, Griffin, Camillo
  • Team E -> 2:46 - 2:54 Sabrina, Ray, Alison
  • Team A -> 2:54 - 3:02 Jane, Shy, Katie
  • Team M -> 3:02 - 3:10 Emma, Alli, Athmika

We will discuss what will be happening at Microsoft's Garage Launch event, and empowering groups in that neighborhood - such as the Possible Project.

<a little recap of last weekend's MITxMake outing>

For those who were able to attend and those who could not, let’s enjoy a moment to celebrate a successful MITxMake outing. It’s not easy to pull off, so there are many people and projects I’d like to thank below.

Here are pictures of our time at the EASE Lab booth: https://photos.app.goo.gl/RQ9kckL4IAEzWvVx1.

/* People to thank */

Thanks to all who took time to engage the attendees.

Liz: special thank you for driving Lacie, Alli, Ray, and Zack.

Melissa special thank you for driving Erika, Lydia, Mika, Jordan, and Micah.

Alison: special thank you for driving Sabrina and Katie.

/* Projects to thank */

Buzzbots: thank you for shaking your way into the hearts of so many visitors.

Approachability Arm Band: thank you for working for the most part, and being a great conversation starter all morning.

Deciding Differently Game: thank you for explaining spoon theory to those who played you, even after a rough ride.

P & M brand stickers: thank you for giving everyone at the event a way to express themselves, and creating a 7-year-old industry killer.

Spice Explorer Online: thank you for adding flavor to our table’s offerings.

Parole Probability Projector: thank you for soliciting unexpected reactions, to show the range of what people bring to the table for conversations about people vs prisoners.

STEMinist fabrics: thank you for making the double helix fashionable and functional (as a pouch).

/* Other people attending and not attending */

Some of you were able to visit a session of the Boston South End Technology Center’s Learn 2 Teach, Teach 2 Learn program, that was happening in the MIT Media Lab while we were working MITxMake. Here’s a photo of the group of ~40 people who will be doing DREAM-like activities with over 500 students around Boston this summer: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1LKpvf_Gt13F0Wxzsa5dAOwuAwwtV8Kgu/view?usp=sharing.

The MITxMake event was a pay-for-entry gathering, like some official Maker Faires are, but they also gave local leaders who have programs serving low-income residents free passes to distribute. The attendance this year was lower than last year from that crowd and all visitors, but it was still a great opportunity to extend access to STEM empowerment.
