Flickering Memories by Bill Le

Remember the night we watched Luka drop 50 points on the Clippers?
We munched down that twelve inch pepperoni pizza,
How about the mornings where we got shake shack for breakfast?
You and I fought over the fries on the center table,
Remember the weekends when you would wake me up at 11AM?
I came to your room to start our Genshin grind,
How about the evenings we played fetch with Stevie the cat?
I’m glad I was there for his last few days,
Remember?

Do these memories still randomly pop up for you?
Perhaps you still think about the day we met,
We stood in a circle, throwing frisbees with everyone,
Perhaps, it didn’t mean as much to you,
Coming halfway across the globe,
I was anxious and lonely,
But it was you
who showed me kindness and compassion,
Perhaps, you still remember,
How I went over to your room for a sleepover the first week of school,
How we laughed and laughed as we watched kitchen nightmares,
How I slept on the floor with my head on your stone hard backpack,
The soreness that morning when I woke up etched in my mind.

So why,
why did you stop talking to me?
Am I supposed to forget,
the promises we forged with each other,
the plans we made together,
and the words so sweet that you uttered?
Was it all a lie?
Did you mean what you said
when you said it in the moment?
Or          did you always kinda know?

If we met again,
would we still mean anything to each other?
What about these memories?
Do they lose meaning too?
